How to Choose a Car Seat

Introduction

Of all the things you'll buy for your child, a good car seat is one of the most important. You'll need one from the moment you take your baby home from the hospital until he or she grows enough to fit into an adult seat belt, typically around the age of 10 or later. So what type of car seat do you need? Are some seats safer than others? What factors should go into picking out the right seat for your family?

Also, as your child grows, you’ll need to transition from one car seat to another. We will explain the different types and brands by age range to help you zero in on the right one for your needs.

( Design an age line for different type of car seat )

Infant Car seats

This is the first seat for most new parents. It can only be installed rear-facing, and it has a removable carrier that connects to a base installed in the car.

This car seat provides the best fit for newborns and smaller babies and can be used for children from 4 to 35 lbs. (depending on the model). Most kids will probably get too tall before they get too heavy for these car seats. A child is too tall when the crown of his head is less than 1 inch from the top of the car seat’s carrier shell or when she exceeds the height limits of the seat.

Convertible Car Seats

A convertible car seat can be used with children of various sizes and can flip from a rear-facing to a forward-facing seat. A convertible seat starts in the rear-facing position for babies and toddlers and switches to forward-facing once your little one has outgrown the seat’s maximum rear-facing height or weight limits. A convertible car seat can take you from day one through the preschool years and beyond.

Convertible car seats are heavier and bulkier than infant car seats. Instead of attaching to a base, convertible seats use your car’s seat belt or LATCH system for installation directly into your car. (LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. It’s a system of built-in straps and hooks on a car seat and anchor hardware in your vehicle designed to make car seat installation safer and simpler.)

Because of their size and weight, convertible car seats don’t attach to a stroller and aren’t designed to be moved regularly between vehicles.

Booster Seat

When your child outgrows the weight or height limit of a forward-facing seat’s harness, it’s time for a booster that uses the car’s own seat belt.

Booster seats raise a child in the car so that the seat belt fits correctly—over the sternum and the center of the collarbone (not the neck) and low across the upper thighs (rather than the abdomen). They come in two main styles: high-back and backless.

Although backless versions are portable and easy to install, we recommend high-back models because they better position the shoulder belt, provide some side-impact protection, and are more comfortable for children to lay their heads against.

Many states have booster laws, some of which require children as old as 9 years and as heavy as 80 lbs. to use a booster.

These provide great value by taking a child from birth to a booster seat. They’re a tempting money saver, but our tests have found that by trying to do too much, they don’t do any single task all that well.

This type of seat accommodates children from 4 to 50 lbs. sitting rear-facing, kids from 20 to 65 lbs. forward-facing in a harness, and kids from 30 to 120 lbs. in booster mode.

All-in-one car seats are often large and heavy, lack the convenience of a detachable carrier, and might not fit smaller babies (or smaller vehicles). They could be a good backup seat or a seat for a carer who transports a child less often.
