New Parents FAQs
Are the first 6 weeks the hardest with a newborn?
The initial weeks can be particularly challenging, especially between weeks 2 and 6. As the initial surge of adrenaline diminishes, many parents experience significant sleep deprivation while their newborn adapts to the external environment. During this period, cluster feeding, growth spurts, and increased nighttime irritability are common, but it is important to persevere.
How long can a newborn go between feedings?
Some might feed every 90 minutes, whereas others might go 2–3 hours between feedings. Newborns should not go more than about 4 hours without feeding, even overnight.
Can I let my 1 week old sleep through the night?
Newborns who sleep for longer stretches should be awakened to feed. Wake your baby every 3–4 hours to eat until he or she shows good weight gain, which usually happens within the first couple of weeks. After that, it's OK to let your baby sleep for longer periods of time at night.
Is 4 oz too much for a 2 week old?
Feedings should occur every 2-3 hours and hopefully every 4-5 during the night. Feeding should take about 30 minutes. If bottle feeding, a ballpark amount is 3-4 ounces.
